As a Diver and Open Water Swimmer I am aware of the powerful nature of the ocean. So when I enter into this vast and powerful body of water I usually know where I want to go or the navigational path I want to take. I also know that it might not be a simple swim to and fro, as the ocean in its entirety is energy, and energy as we know abides by certain laws. One very important universal law which the ocean succumbs to is The Law of Rhythm. It is this Law of Rhythm which is responsible for the push and pull of the currents, the ebb and flow of the tides, the crashing waves of rough seas or the calmness of a still ocean. The Law of Rhythm states that the energy in the universe is like a pendulum. Whenever something swings to the right it must then swing to the left. Everything goes through cycles, yet everything has a rhythm or pattern. We experience it in nature all of the time, the tides and currents of the ocean, the way the ocean kisses the shoreline, our seasons from winter to summer, night turning into day. Sometimes it feels as if the ocean is pulling you closer to where you want to go, other times it is pushing you away as you feel the current head on, and sometimes the current simply cuts across you. I can never be in control of the ocean, only aware of its movement and in doing so I have to be aware of my own self. I need to know when to move and how to move. I need to be in constant flow with my own energy and feel the currents and tides of the ocean. This way I can navigate my way through the ocean. Adhering to the natural flow of the ocean will bring me closer to where I want to be, even though at times it may feel like the ocean is pulling me in the opposite direction. It is this trust that even though the movement of the water takes me in a different direction at times to where I want to go, it is my knowledge of myself and adjusting to the flow which will eventually get me to the point I want to be. The Law of Rhythm only works with energy, so it has no idea who you are, what you believe in, or what you did or did not do, nor is it a punishment. The effects it has on the ocean and who is in it, is all the same irrespective of who you are.
Not only is the Law of Rhythm applicable in nature but it also applies to our lives as well as our emotions, since it is all energy. We constantly experience these ups and downs in life which I am sure we all can attest to. If we can for a moment think back, for many of us 2020 started out well; the great joy when everything goes right, when everything is in flow. Your job was absolutely amazing, business prospects were looking promising, your family was overjoyed with happiness and all was well in the world. Suddenly though things took a turn the “tide” or the “current” changed. Your job was no longer secure, business prospects started to fizzle out, your child had some social mishap, your relationships started to take strain and all of a sudden you focused on the struggle. You have been “swept off course” as you got caught in the ebb and now you are trying to correct your course as quickly as possible. You seem to be moving further and further away from where you were heading and your immediate reaction is to hold on and fight the tide. This is the ebb and flow of life or as we now aware The Law of Rhythm at work. The best way to navigate this turbulent ocean, called Covid or Lockdown, in order to reach your goals is to relax into where the “ocean” is pulling you, because there is most certainly a reason you have been brought there. You are being shifted in another direction for a reason. In your fight to continuously swim against the current and keep things the way it was you lose sight of the fact that you were meant to swim with it. The moment you realize you cannot control the environment around you, and you can only be aware of it, and control yourself, is the moment you let go of where your ego wants you to be and surrender to where the tide is taking you.
The way to use the Law of Rhythm to your advantage is to be like a swimmer in the open ocean, to be self-aware, mindful and know you cannot control that which is outside of you but to enjoy the swim irrespective because that is who you are and exactly where you were meant to be. The Law of Rhythm is a reason for you to believe that things will change for the better. It is not a matter of “if” but rather “when”. The Law of Rhythm is a reason for you to know that sometimes you will get what you want during flow and sometimes it will happen during the ebb tide. The Law of Rhythm is a reason for you to know that you can set your sights on anything that you desire. You just do not get to say when, nor do you get to say how it comes to you. You do not get to wrap your own gift, but your gift will arrive.
